Abstract

This study describes the lived experience of pain in people with kidney failure receiving supportive care.  Fifteen people completed in depth interviews. Participants were also invited to utilise the photovoice technique to help them articulate their experience of pain. Inductive analysis using the Framework Approach was used. Participants encountered many barriers to pain management that resulted in a need to devise their own solutions. Living with chronic pain was described as an experience to be endured rather than managed and resulted in a loss of control and restriction of daily function. The results indicate pain management strategies used by this cohort have limited effectiveness, with far reaching consequences on the physical, social, emotional health of those with kidney failure.
